Why fabric pills

Pills are small clusters of fibers that gather on a fabric’s surface. They form when friction loosens fibers and rolls them together. On a blanket, that friction might come from regular use or laundering. On a sofa, it often appears where people sit, lean, or brush against the fabric. Pilling does not always mean an item is poorly made; even a well-loved textile can develop it.

Before reaching for a tool, check what you are seeing. Loose lint, pet hair, and crumbs may lift off with a soft brush or vacuum attachment, while pills remain attached to the fabric. Some textured materials are meant to have a nubby surface, so take a close look at an inconspicuous area before trying to make the whole piece perfectly smooth.

Remove pills without pulling the fabric

Start with the care label and any instructions supplied with the blanket or furniture. For a sturdy, smooth-surfaced fabric, a fabric shaver can be useful. Lay a blanket flat, hold the fabric gently taut, and move the shaver lightly over a small area. On upholstery, work in short passes without pressing into seams, piping, or tufting. Empty the shaver often so it can cut cleanly.

Test any tool in a hidden spot first. A shaver blade can catch loose threads, and it may not suit open weaves, long-pile fabrics, boucle, or delicate knits. For a few isolated pills, small scissors offer more control: lift each pill slightly and snip the fibers connecting it to the surface, without cutting into the base fabric. Do not pull pills off by hand, as that can draw out more fibers or leave a snag.

Finish by brushing away the trimmed fibers with a soft clothing brush or using a vacuum with an upholstery attachment on a suitable setting. A lint roller can collect loose fuzz, but avoid rubbing aggressively or repeatedly applying strong adhesive to delicate surfaces. If a fabric begins to look thin or a thread catches, stop rather than trying to clear every pill at once.

Make blanket care gentler

Washing creates movement and friction, so follow the blanket’s care label rather than relying on one routine for every throw. When machine washing is permitted, wash with similar, soft items instead of rough garments with zippers or hooks. A gentle cycle and a laundry bag, if the blanket fits without being tightly packed, may help protect a smaller or more delicate throw.

Drying matters too. Use the method recommended on the label, and avoid more heat or tumbling than the fabric needs. If air-drying is suitable, support a heavy wet blanket so its weight does not stretch it out of shape. Store clean blankets folded with room to breathe, away from rough baskets or fasteners that can catch their surfaces. These steps will not prevent all pilling, but they can limit unnecessary wear.

Reduce friction on upholstered furniture

A sofa or armchair cannot be laundered like a blanket, but small habits can help distribute wear. If your furniture has reversible cushions and the maker recommends turning them, rotate them regularly. Vacuum upholstery gently to remove grit and loose fibers, using an attachment appropriate for the fabric. Treat spills according to the furniture’s cleaning instructions rather than rubbing the area hard.

Notice where repeated contact happens. A textured bag, a rough throw, or clothing hardware may rub the same patch of upholstery day after day. Moving a throw or changing which cushion gets the most use can help spread that contact. If you use a cover on a favorite seat, choose one that feels soft against the upholstery and does not slide back and forth excessively.

Aim for tidy, not brand-new

Pilling may return as more surface fibers work loose, particularly in areas that see daily use. A light touch-up when needed is usually kinder to the fabric than repeatedly shaving it until it feels perfectly flat. Because removal takes fibers away, it is best to leave firmly attached texture alone when you are unsure whether it is a pill.

For a new textile, consider how it will be used as well as how it looks. A decorative throw may see little friction, while an everyday sofa blanket needs to stand up to frequent handling and washing. Whatever the material, checking its care guidance and treating it gently will do more for its appearance than any single pill-removal tool.
